About The Medical Foundation

Mission

The Medical Foundation is a nonprofit, public health and medical research funding organization committed to helping people live healthier lives and creating healthy communities through prevention, health promotion and research. For over half a century The Medical Foundation has worked with academic medical research institutions, health organizations, community coalitions and neighborhood groups, state and local governments, the faith community, and youth serving organizations to create grant programs to support medical research as well as identify and address important health issues in innovative ways.

Background

The Medical Foundation was established in 1957 by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the United Way to support medical research and health education. Since our inception, our focus has grown to include chronic disease, substance abuse prevention, environmental health, behavioral health, health communications, information and referral, assessment and evaluation and youth development.

As a non-profit organization The Medical Foundation is supported by state and federal government contracts, foundation grants, individual contributions, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, bank trusts and fee for service revenues.
